Projection Mapping Ideas

Water?

latitude projection mapping

I like the concept of projecting onto a body of water, the marina for example, because it would be possible to make elements in the animation appear to burst out of the water or be submerged beneath it. Of course the marina may be too deep so the projection may appear faint in reality. But projecting onto a “screen of water” (see here for examples) is a way of taking this aquatic idea into a more physically three dimensional environment . I’ve saw this done at Latitude Festival 2015. As you can see from the image on the right, it can be used to make a very ethereal image as it’s vivid, yet semi-transparent. Almost ghostly in this example.

 Vapour?

vape2 (1 of 1)Projecting onto smoke or steamy vapour could also prove to be a cool concept. While distortion would occur as I suppose it’s basically a 3D screen. My personal preference for doing this would be to use my vaporiser. I could incorporate smoke ring with the projections which could have a nice effect, while also being extremely tedious.

On the right you can see an image of me blowing a plume of vapour. Maybe it’s just me being overly into vaping and vape tricks, but projecting images onto the vapour seems like a cool way of combing this project with one of my hobbies.

However, in order for this to be a plausible idea, unfortunately it requires an indoor environment that’s draught-free. So it’s slightly impractical in that sense. It could still make for an interesting video in the meantime.

The Body?

While the brief does specify to ” find a location that is relevant”, why couldn’t that location be a person? Could I be that relevant location? I guess so. What better place to project information about me than… Me?

I was inspired by this “Ink Mapping” video that I stumbled across a few days ago. The concept includes two of my favourite things: Tattoos and digital media. Excellent. Plus, you wouldn’t just have to project onto a/my body, the projections could interact with the surrounding environment too (as seen in the video). The possibilities are endless. In essence, it could be like a well timed performance if the projected elements moved with the body. Alternatively, motion tracking elements on the body would be better, though slightly more complicated with real-world real-time. But as a concept, doing this in After Effects would be a piece of cake.

The Moon?

I’ve also been looking into the idea of lunar projection mapping… By that I mean projecting an image onto the moon. While I know this idea is highly  impractical, it’s not a new concept and people have already considered it. Ignoring the fact that it’s a massively impractical idea, it would generate outrageously large publicity because, I mean, come on man, it’s the freakin’ moon. “It’d be cool” is essentially the point I’m making. Don’t worry, I didn’t take this particular concept seriously either.
